Mole Valley Youth Showcase Awards 2011

Two members from Kickboxkarate were up for awards at the Mole Valley Youth Showcase Awards held at Dorking Halls on Friday 20^th 2011.

 Kym Gamble- Nomination for Youth Professional Award

Kym was nominated to recognise the particular achievement of working with or supporting young people and youth achievement.

George Harris- Nomination for Youth Sporting Achievement Award

George was nominated for achieving a personal goal in sports and displaying particular talent in sports.

Unfortunately Kym and George did not win the awards but being nominated for both these awards is an achievement in its own right. Well done to you both for your hard work and contribution to the club. Without you both Kickboxkarate would not be what it is today.

Please Note Gradings take place during the normal class lesson times but might over run slightly for higher grades to complete their syllabus. Junior students must have all their assessments to be able to grade.

What you must bring to Grading lesson :- 

• Valid Licence Book

• Appropriate uniform, with SKF badge and current belt 

• Sparring equipment (see separate grade requirement sheet) 

• Payment for Grading

Fail to provide the above may result in the student being unable to grade or points deducted from their grading.

Irish Open 4th-7th March 2011

Irish Open 2011

Kelly Thaxter, Sean Mccarthy and Jacey Cashman went to Compete at the Irish Open in Dublin. The Irish Open is one of the largest tournaments with over 2200 competitors attending.

Kelly entered in both the women -65kg novice and intermediate section but unfortunately due to the high standard of the event she did not place in the medals.

Jacey made it to the quarter finals of his division out of the 97 competitiors in his category advanced mens -74kg.

Sean placed 3^rd out of the 82 competitors in his category advanced mens -69kg.

Sports Awards 2010 Kickboxkarate Winners!

Kickboxkarate win the 2010 Sports Awards team of the year

The Lingfeild Park Racecourse was the venue for the 2010 Sports Awards. Kickboxkarate were nominated for team of the year in early January other nominations included: Dorking Rugby Club, Westcott Cricket Club and Dorking Athletics Club in the same category. Sean McCarthy instructor of kickboxkarate was also nominated for sports personality. 

The results were sent out a few weeks before the awards night so Sean knew that Kickboxkarate  had won team of the year before the awards night. As a surprise Sean didn't tell the team the results. 

Nine members and people who help out at the club were invited to attend the presentation night. 

The night included a three course meal with complementary drinks all night. The awards was presented by Nicolas Owen the famous news presenter and a player from the England womens national cricket team.

WAKO British Championships 2011

Kickboxkarate at the WAKO British Championships 2011

Kickboxkarate / SKF went to the WAKO British Championships in Nottingham on Sunday 27th February 2011 and returned with 4 gold medals and 1 bronze medal!

There will be an outdoor training night Monday 7th in Beare Green as the hall is unavailable for the evening.

Kids Class: 6.00 pm

Adults Class: 7.30 pm

Team Spirit

Team Spirit 

What is TEAM SPIRIT?

TEAM SPIRIT is open to all Kickboxkarate / SKF members regardless of grade or ability. The Team is aimed at those who wish to do competition. Please come along to experience coaching from some of the top fighters in the world. TEAM SPIRIT is a non-profit squad aimed to help students develop in competition all the funds received will go directly back into the fighters.

A message from Sean:

Hello all long time no speak. You all have my full apologies for nothing happening with Team Spirit recently. The reason for there being no squad training is that I have been busy with classes and other personal stuff. I have been working hard today organising the squad and trying to work out what is the best way to run things for the team and move us forward. We do face a problem in moving the team forward. The problem we face is that there are so many other things going on Sundays. There are tournaments, Squad Trainings and other events happening nearly every Sunday.

Solution:

A 1 hour Sparing session held at my sparing class 12.15pm to 1.15pm at Dorking Sports Centre on the last Saturday of every month. This will be a free session there will be no charge. It would be a good way to meet up on a regular basis as a team and bond.

I will try and get a squad training in at least once every two months. The first date I could get this year was 22^nd May and that was the closest date to February I could find where there is no other events taking place.

I am happy if a coach of team spirit can hold a squad training before the 22^nd May without colliding with other events. Please contact me if you as a coach could hold a squad training.

Team Selection:

I will be working on a formal selection process for the team along with all the other coaches of Team Spirit. More news will be coming soon.

I look forward to seeing you all at 12.15pm for a 1 hour sparing session at Dorking Sports Centre on the 26^th March!

Sorry unfortunately the class will have to be cancelled on Thursday 3rd March 2011. Please arrange to train on another night. I tried my best to find an instructor to cover the class but I was unsuccessful.

The reason for the class being cancelled is because the club has been nominated for Team of the Year at the Surrey Advertiser Sports Awards 2010 held at Lingfield Park Racecourse.

On the 5^th and 6^th February 2011 Kickboxkarate students James Harris, George Harris and Kelly Thaxter went out to fight at the Athens Challenge in Greece along with the two Instructors Jacey Cashman and Sean McCarthy. Sean and Jacey were fighting along with three other team mates from the newly formed Team SAP UK who is sponsored by the martial arts brand SAP.

The Team Arrived on the Friday afternoon where we weighed in for our divisions and prepared for the competition over the next two days. Saturday was the open weight divisions and team event. All fighters fought in their open weight divisions but unfortunately did not place. Next up was the team event Team SAP UK won the first round with ease but narrowly lost to the Italian national team (Team Best fighter) in the second round. Team Best fighter placed 2^nd overall.

We woke up early on Sunday for the individual weight classes for both kids and adults. In the advanced kids section George Harris was first to kick off the day receiving 3^rd place for his efforts. James Harris won his weight class receiving 1^st place in the black belt section. Kelly Thaxter entered in the intermediate adults section and received 3^rd place. Sean McCarthy and Jacey Cashman both received joint 3^rd place fighting in the same weight class. Fellow Team SAP UK member Lee Thackrah received 3^rd place in his weight class as well.

It was a great trip and an excellent experience had by all. Thank you to Sue Harris, Richard Harris and Tony Cashman who was behind the team and supporting everyone over the weekend.

What is Hell Day The name says it all.
Many years ago Corey Cain (5x World Champion, World Taekwondo Champion and several times kickboxing champion) organised a training session for serious Martial Artists of a high standard who need something extra than your normal every day training session. He selected people who he considered were true Martial arts practitioners and who loved to fight or train hard. No politics, no hype, just pure, raw hard training ‘til you drop. He called it Hell Day and those that took up the challenge found out why he had named it so. Hell Day has been going since 1997 and it’s great to see the true warriors coming back every year and introducing new people to the unforgettable feeling. Once again it was that time to get together whether you practice Kickboxing, Tae-Kwon-do, Kung Fu of Sport Karate and assess what you are truly made of.

Why is there a need for HELL DAY?It’s simple. When you reach a high standard, you get stale and cannot create any ‘magic’ in your training unless you have somebody of a similar level or even higher level to stimulate you, both physically and mentally. Many of you teach students and cannot spar with them in the manner in which you would like to because your ability is too high for them, therefore you cannot excel. You cannot reach the point of mercy on your own without others of the same mindset around you supporting you.

It is a day of beasting for all those who like to challenge themselves and really find out what they are made of both physically and metally.

Team Kickboxkarate- running for 4 years team kickboxkarate trains in Dorking and its fighters compete both nationally and internationally. The group have British champions and world champions including Coach Sean McCarthy who is nominated for another award. They also have some youth fighters with international acclaim, including James and George Harris. In total the group won five gold six silver and seven bronze medals nationally, while they have also scooped six gold seven silver and nine bronze international medals. During the four years the group have gone from strength to strength, which is down to their hard work and determination.

Sean McCarthy- After claiming the WAKO World title at the end of 2009, kick boxer Sean McCarthy followed that up with another successful campaign. The Dorking fighter just missed out on a medal at the Athens Challenge before becoming British Champion in February. Sean also went on to win the Dutch Open and claimed a bronze medal with third place at Best Fighter World Cup in Italy in June. He also came second and third in two weight contests at the Belgium open. 2009 may have been a world winning title for Sean McCarthy, but 2010 has just been as impressive for the Kickboxkarate coach.

The kickboxkarate Christmas party & awards night was a great success. We had moved the date from Saturday 4^th December to Saturday 15^th January due to the severe snow that had fallen over the week.

Every year we award students for their efforts over the past year at the Christmas party. Here are the results:

Kickboxkarate would like to thank Steve Mcdonald, Richard and Sue Harris, Neil and Kym Gamble, Kelly Thaxter, Lorraine McCarthy, Andy Gale, Lisa Boardman and Laura Fitch. These people have made Kickboxkarate what is today.

After the awards took place we started the annual games competition. The kids started off the games with the highlights being chocolate eating with pads on and musical statues. The adults then started the cracker challenge which involves two teams in a race to eat dry crackers. Great games that provided an excellent atmosphere.

After that Kickboxkarate hit the dance floor right until we got kicked out.

Kickboxkarate would like to say thank you to the staff of the Courtyard Cafe & Bar for letting us use the venue for our end of year party and thank you for the great buffet.
